May 3rd is Italy’s Earth Overshoot Day, the moment the country has consumed more natural resources than Earth can regenerate in an entire year. From here on, we’re borrowing from the future.
The numbers put things in perspective. Luxembourg crossed this line back on 17 February. Germany, 8 May. Hungary won’t reach it until 24 June: same continent, very different footprints. National choices matter.
Fashion is one of the heaviest contributors. Textiles account for roughly 10% of global CO₂ emissions and rank among the top water-polluting industries worldwide. Reducing its impact is no longer optional.
Italy has a genuine point of excellence here: Prato, the world’s largest textile recycling hub. A model worth celebrating. But the scale of the problem is bigger than any single district. Closing the loop requires a full technological stack, and today’s main approaches, Mechanical, Chemical, and Enzymatic Recycling, each come with their own opportunities and limitations.
